Given the stereotypical image of scotch-soaked frat-boys leering through a waft of stale cigar smoke at an endless array of half-naked, good-time party girls, it's no wonder the bachelor party is an anxiety-inducing event for many brides-to-be. Just picturing their future hubby sharing a night of drunken adulterous debauchery with their delinquent pals is enough to make any recently ringed women re-think the whole marriage idea. But is this rite of passage really something to worry about? Maybe not.
Evolution of Bachelor Parties
According to Fran Bernard of Premier Parties, there is a change occurring. More and more men are designing alternative bachelor bashes that revolve around an action-oriented outing, special interest, or professional sporting event. Outdoorsmen, for example, may take off on weekend camping, fishing, or paintball excursions. Thrill seekers often use the opportunity to try an extreme sport like sky diving, bungee jumping, or auto racing. Others simply head for the nearest arena to take in a game or concert.
“Golf outings are the most popular,” says Bernard in an October 2000 phone interview. The relaxed pace gives everyone an opportunity to talk with and goof on the guest of honor. During these outings, the groom is usually given a different gift after each hole. They can be embarrassing, funny, or just plain sexual. “A month’s supply of Viagra is always a big hit.”
