Many people, when they think of Las Vegas, imagine casinos, hotels and terrible traffic along the strip. However, the desert region surrounding Las Vegas is ideal for many outdoor activities such as hiking and rock climbing. Red Rock Canyon sits a few miles west of the city on 197,000 acres in the Mojave Desert. The geology and beauty draws many visitors, Las Vegas residents and tourists alike.

Elevation Change at Red Rock Canyon

The highest point on Red Rock’s famous Scenic Drive is 4,760 ft. This elevation change is somewhat significant considering Las Vegas lies in a valley. Be prepared for elevation adjustment, since breathing is more difficult and dehydration happens faster.

Best Time to Hike at Red Rock Canyon

The ideal time to hike at Red Rock Canyon is the winter, where temperatures hover near a pleasant 50 degrees. Spring and fall are also good times to hike, since it does not get as hot on the red rock. Always bring plenty of water and sunscreen, and take particular caution if hiking in the summer.
