This hike at Red Rock Canyon begins off highway 159, south and outside of the Loop area. The trailhead is located just north of Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. It is one trail head south of Oak Creek Canyon. This hike begins like many hikes into the Wilson Cliffs of the Spring Mountains with a gradual slope up toward the mountains. The hike is about one and a half miles and rated easy. The beginning of the trail is a fire rehabilitation area so it is important to stay on the path. Fires do occur, this 2005 fire was caused by people, even though the novice may see little to burn. Several areas that have been subject to fires can be observed in Red Rock Canyon. Fires do great damage in these areas. They can be caused by lightening or man. The rehabilitation areas can be watched over time and the restorative power of nature is remarkable.

The Desert Approach to First Creek Canyon

The desert is so flat that at every stop the hiker makes, the vistas are breathtaking in every direction. Yet, the next rise or stopping point always seems to have an even better view. As the hiker approaches the canyon and gains that little bit of elevation and shade from the mountains the vegetation can be seen developing along the creek. The water is usually heard before it is seen. The rocks and the vegetation hide what is obviously there. Finally a step or two off the main trail reveals the water, cool and clear. First creek forms many small ponds that are several feet deep. These occur one after another the length of the creek. Each one beckons the explorer.
