The history of Las Vegas
Las Vegas, a holiday playground in the Nevada desert, was once a Mormon settlement in the times of the silver rush in the 1800s. When the Union Pacific Railroad started to run through the town in 1905, various businesses, including gambling establishments, opened for business. During the Great Depression in 1931, the construction of the Hoover Dam, on the Colorado River, attracted many people for employment. The dam was finished in 1936, and today provides the electricity to light up Las Vegas.
Gambling was also legalized that same year, which resulted in the transformation of the city with many casinos and hotels being constructed. After the second World War, the city came alive with more extravagant resorts and top-class entertainment.
